Your pet is important to you. Having regular checkups, or wellness exams, is one of the most important things to help keep your pet healthy. As your pet ages, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends annual wellness checkups; they also recommend that the frequency of visits increase as your pet gets older. Preventive care is critical and we have created wellness protocols for your pets life, through all the stages from birth to old age.
Having your pet seen at your regular vet clinic on a routine basis will help catch and diagnose health problems early. This helps keep your pet from getting to the point of no return, where the condition is untreatable. Regular visits at your vet clinic allow checkups and monitoring of your pet’s health. Your pet is not able to communicate how they are feeling like a child would. They will just look at you with sad eyes and a droopy tail. They can’t speak and say that they are sick, so you might not be aware of a major illness or condition that is developing. Regular checkups allow the vet to identify and manage problems before they get worse and become life threatening. Our pets age much faster than we do, and these wellness exams are the best way to keep your pet with you for a long and healthy life.
What should you expect during a wellness exam? Our veterinarian Dr. Godman and his assistant will take your pet’s vital signs and ask for a complete history of the pet’s health. They will do an exam from the tip of your pet’s nose to the tip of their tail. They may also draw blood for diagnostic testing or get a urine sample/stool sample to test for parasites, kidney issues. They may also give your pet a vaccine, depending on your pet’s age and overall health. Our vet may also recommend heartworm or flea prevention.
A wellness exam at your vet clinic is an easy and simple way to keep an eye on your pet’s overall health; it is very effective as well. Don’t worry, a wellness exam does not mean your pet will automatically be put through an array of unnecessary tests that are complicated and expensive. Some pets need regular monitoring of their blood or other tests, a great many pets benefit from just being physically examined, having the vet listen to their heart and lungs and just generally asses their overall health. Not only does this help keep major health issues from going undetected, it allows the vet clinic to establish baseline values for your pet. If there is a problem later down the road, the vet clinic can say that they know what the normal blood pressure is, or the normal temperature range is for your pet. They have examined your pet regularly and have the data recorded. Having these ‘healthy measurements’ on record, helps the vet’s office treat your pet in emergency situations. A wellness exam always includes a dental exam and weight measurement. These are important variables and can change rapidly which can affect your pets overall health significantly.Detecting any medical problems early allows the chance to correct them and will allow your pet to enjoy a long and healthy life full of love and attention with you.
